In the first two seasons, Caine carried a 9MM Beretta Cougar on the job. Since the beginning of season three, he has been shown carrying a SIG-Sauer P229. He is very insistent on gun maintenance, especially since team member Tim Speedle was killed in a shootout after his gun misfired. One of Caine's reasons for selecting Officer Ryan Wolfe as Speedle's replacement (in episode 302) is Wolfe's compulsive care of his firearm.
He is later forced to fire Wolfe, as the younger CSI compromised himself during the course of the investigation due to his gambling debts and lack of honesty regarding the situation (episode 522, "Burned"). Caine indicates a willingness to allow Wolfe to redeem himself, however, and possibly allow him to return to the team after reviewing all the files from his previous cases (episode 523, "Kill Switch").
At the end of Season 2 (episode 223, "MIA/NYC - Nonstop"), Caine travels to New York City in pursuit of a murder suspect and meets Detective Mac Taylor and his team, inaugurating the first season of CSI: New York. Caine later reunites with Detective Taylor and the New York CSIs to track down and arrest the murderer, Henry Darius, who would be extradited to Florida to face the death penalty (CSI: Miami episode 407, "Felony Flight," CSI: NY episode 207, Manhattan Manhunt").
He has many recurring enemies throughout the series, from serial killer Walter Resden to abusive Internal Affairs Agent Rick Stetler or corrupt judge Joseph Ratner. Some he thought put away for good come back to haunt him. Clavo Cruz, serving a life sentence for murdering a woman (episode 201, "Blood Brothers," episode 315, "Identity"), escapes custody in a dramatic rocket attack on a courthouse (superficially injuring coroner Alexx Woods). Cruz then kidnaps a court stenographer and forces Horatio to bring him $1 million dollars in exchange for her location. It is all a set-up, however, and Caine and Delko are ambushed on the roof of a parking garage. Though Horatio shoots down one man and escapes without injury, Delko is critically wounded even as Caine fires at the fleeing gunmen (episode 514, "No Man's Land"). Horatio eventually forces Cruz out of hiding by removing all his avenues of escape. Cruz approaches Horatio outside the Miami-Dade Crime Lab, and Caine kills Clavo with a single shot to the chest (episode 515, "Man Down").
Caine finds himself targeted by the son of a crime lord he helped put in jail some years earlier. After Caine's vehicle is vandalized, the young man smugly denies culpability, but Horatio sets him up in return and arrests him with deep disappointment after the young man walks headlong into his trap and tries to kill him (episode 602, "Cyber-lebrity").
Life before CSI
Caine's parents named him after author Horatio Alger ("Cross Jurisdictions"). Before he moved to Miami, Caine worked in New York City. (Coincidentally, Caruso starred in the first two seasons of NYPD Blue as Detective John Kelly.) It was there that he killed the man who murdered his mother — his own father. (episode 417, "Collision") On the job, in 1995, he was badly stabbed while investigating a case in which children were locked in closets while their parents were murdered. The perpetrator, Walter Resden, harbored a deep grudge against Caine, collecting the blood from the stabbing and preserving it for 10 years in order to frame him for the murder of Caine's girlfriend, Rachel Turner (episode 406, "Under Suspicion"). Caine is eventually forced to shoot Resden, although not fatally (episode 415, "Skeletons").
After his arrival in Florida, Horatio joined the Miami-Dade Police as a homicide detective but later transferred to the bomb squad, where he was mentored by Al Humphries, an older cop, who is later tragically killed after accidentally triggering a bomb he is attempting to disarm (episode 102, "Losing Face"). Finally, Caine moves to the Crime Lab, accepting a promotion to lieutenant (which earns him the animosity of Sergeant Rick Stetler, who is also vying for the rank). When veteran CSI Megan Donner goes on personal leave following the death of her husband, Horatio becomes the permanent head of the lab (episode 1.01, "Golden Parachute").
Personal life
Caine's original backstory, revealed over the course of the first three seasons, revolves primarily around his relationship with his late brother Raymond Caine, also a police officer, and with Raymond's supposed widow, Detective Yelina Salas. Horatio has, several times, found himself cleaning up Ray's messes. He discovers that his brother had an out-of-wedlock daughter with a drug addict, and he attempts to conceal this information from Yelina, even to the point of making her think the girl was in fact his own child. When the girl, Madison, falls ill and requires a transplant, Horatio is forced to reveal her true relationship with Ray to Yelina (episode 316, "Nothing to lose", 0:54:54 min). It was revealed in episode 320 ("Killer Date") that Raymond's apparent death had actually been staged to enable him to go deep undercover to gather information for a government investigation. Raymond and Horatio are briefly reunited when Ray Jr. is kidnapped. The brothers successfully rescue the boy and fake Ray Sr.'s death again before packing the whole family off to Brazil (episode 324, "10-7"). Unfortunately, Ray Sr. is unable to keep out of trouble even there, culminating in his murder; he dies in Horatio's arms (episode 501, "Rio").
The show also explores another of Caine's history: the events surrounding his mother's murder. In the episode "Manhattan Manhunt", a continuation of "Felony Flight", Caine is momentarily interrupted on his case when he is served with a subpoena. In "Nailed", Caine informs the rest of the CSI team that he had recently been charged by a district attorney in New York with the murder of the man who killed his mother. It is later revealed in "Collision" that this man was actually Caine's own father. After arresting Resden, who is charged with murdering his foster siblings because they didn't defend against his abusive foster father, whom he also attempted to kill, Caine reveals that he identifies with Resden because he, Caine, was physically abused by his father.
After Tim Speedle's death, Caine has a recurring nightmare in which he (Caine) is the one whose weapon misfired. Rather than talking with a counselor, as Internal Affairs officer Rick Stetler orders, he instead works it out with his girlfriend, State Attorney Rebecca Nevins (episode 310, "After the Fall".) He breaks up with her, however, after she makes a deal with a criminal he helped arrest (episode 313, "Cop Killer"). He later dates Rachel Turner, who is murdered by Walter Dresden in an attempt to take revenge on Caine for "embarrassing" him in New York about a decade earlier (episode 406, "Under Suspicion"). Caine also has a deep, unspoken affection for his brother's widow, Yelina Salas, and he is consistently concerned about her well-being. Though she evidently shares his feelings, neither of them has acted on them (episode 522, "Burned," et al.).
Despite knowing her for less than a year, Caine marries Eric Delko's leukemia-ridden sister Marisol, who is shot by a Mala Noche gang member and later dies in a hospital (episode 424, "Rampage"). He pursues the man who ordered the hit on her, Antonio Riaz, all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and eventually kills him in a knife fight, but not before Riaz brutally beats Caine's brother Raymond to death and attempts to corrupt Ray's son, Ray Jr. (episode 501, "Rio").
As Eric Delko lies in critical condition in the hospital following a near-fatal gunshot to the head several months later, Horatio and the other team members take turns at his bedside. Delko, his memory impaired by his wound, asks Horatio where Marisol is. Caine is unable to say the words, but Eric interprets his silence and sheds wordless tears as they both mourn her death (episode 515, "Man Down").
Perhaps because he has lost several family members to violent crime, Caine is determined to the point of obsession to put criminals behind bars. Caine also advocates the death penalty, and is not afraid to threaten suspects with it (CSI: NY episode 207, "Manhattan Manhunt").
In the sixth season's premiere, Horatio finds out that he is the biological father of a suspect in a murder case. His son is an orphaned boy named Kyle Harmon. Kyle's mother, Julia Eberly, met Horatio sixteen years earlier when he was under the alias John Walden, doing undercover tactical work in Pensacola. Though Horatio claimed that the relationship was serious, at least to him, he never knew she was pregnant, as she disappeared only a few months later. Kyle then went through a progression of foster homes, and he eventually landed in juvenile prison after going on a joyride in a stolen boat. Kyle later becomes a suspect in the murder of his parole officer, and when he is brought in for questioning, Horatio immediately recognizes the resemblance and begins to investigate into his past. With the help of Yelina Salas (who found Kyle's birth certificate, which listed "John Walden" as the father, an undercover name that Horatio used in the past) and Maxine Valera (who confirmed the relationship by DNA tests), he discovers that Kyle is indeed his biological son. When Horatio calls Kyle "son" at the end of the episode, the young man angrily replies "I'm not your son!" (episode 601, "Dangerous Son").
After rescuing Kyle, who has been kidnapped out of jail and left in a pipe, Horatio admits to Kyle that he is his father. (episode 603, "Inside Out")
In episode 613, "Raising Caine," Kyle's mother Julia Eberly, who is now known as Julia Winston, is the prime suspect in the murder of her husband. While the CSI's prove that another man killed her husband, he claims that Julia planned the whole thing. Calleigh informs the man that they cannot prove Julia's involvement and therefore she goes free. Meanwhile, Julia tells Horatio that she left Kyle with his grandmother because she was not fit to mother him, but had always intended on taking him back once she was ready. She attends Kyle's trial, during which the main witness for the prosecution never shows, leaving the court no choice but to free Kyle. The CSI's learn that Julia Winston paid the witness a large amount of money to skip the trial. As the show ends the witness is seen, visibly hurt, taped to her steering wheel, with the car sinking into a lake. Back at the courthouse the Judge informs Kyle that both Horatio Caine and Julia Winston have filed separate custody suits, and Kyle must decide who he wants to go with. Kyle eventually decides to go with his mother, telling Horatio that she is all he has thought of for years. A clearly saddened Horatio tells him to keep in touch and delivers an icy farewell to Julia.
In the first part of the two-part opener to season six, episode 615, "Ambush", the body of Kathleen Newberry is discovered by two kids "bomb-fishing" in the lake. Horatio immediately thinks somehow Julia is responsible for this, and indeed finds her fingerprint and her assistant's hair on the body. He several times questions her about her involvement, to no avail. At this point Kyle is obviously partisan to his mother, and tells Horatio he won't let his father "use him against her." In the end, Julia manages to have Horatio arrested and extradited to Brazil for the murder of Antonio Riaz, the man who killed Marisol. At the end of the episode, Horatio is told by the chief of police in Brazil that he has made a lot of enemies there, but he is "free to go". The irony of this is not lost on Horatio, who has been handed a weapon by the chief, and who hears a cadre of guns cocking as the closing credits run.
In the opening seconds of the second part of the episode, actually episode 616, "All In", Horatio is surrounded by a posse of Mala Noche vigilantes with firearms, but succeeds in taking out the whole gang with nary a scratch - "Mala Noche justice, meet Miami justice." The scene after the credits is his small plane landing in Miami, he none the worse for wear, only to have Delko inform him while crossing the tarmac that Calleigh has been kidnapped by her internet stalker, whose web site is hosted by Dan Cooper, the former CSI whom Calleigh had fired for fraud in episode 604, "Bang Bang, Your Debt". Calleigh spends the early part of the episode unwillingly assisting two criminals who have shot their poker buddy to "solve a crime with Calleigh" and cover up the shooting, while Horatio and Delko and the full team are searching for her. Meanwhile Horatio meets face-to-face with Julia and informs her that Calleigh's kidnapping has the signature of Ron Saris, the thug who killed Kathleen Newberry and who is now living with Kyle and Julia. H's warning to Julia is "If you and Kyle stay with this man, you will both die." And she seems to listen.
His character is further expanded by the hints in this 2-part episode of the beginnings of a deeper feeling for Calleigh than just that of a co-worker. The clues she leaves behind from spot to spot are totally clear to H, while obfuscated to everyone else. She suggests to the younger of the two thieves who have kidnapped her that he is "not that guy" and makes an excuse to get him out of there, whereupon he immediately goes to Horatio and confesses. The follow-up investigation ties up several loose ends for Horatio, who has been following Calleigh's planted clues throughout the episode. At the end, it is indeed H with the gun pointed at the back of the villain's head, saying, "If I were you, I'd fold." She and Delko share a poignant look at the end, and he confesses he doesn't know what he would do if something happened to her. But it is Horatio who is shown staring down on the scene as the bad guys are collected, following Calleigh's hummer with his eyes. And there will still be more for H to discover about Julia and Kyle, besides the fact that his son has now taken up residence with a murderer.

David Caruso portrays Horatio Caine in a very idiosyncratic manner, sometimes resulting in parodies of the character (the most well known of these is probably Jim Carrey's on the Late Show with David Letterman). Caine is often seen putting on a pair of Silhouette Titanium Model 8568 sunglasses (with special polarized lenses), which online fans have started referring to as 'The Sunglasses of Justice' or 'Justice Shades'. He often stands sideways to the person with whom he is speaking and has a tendency to cock his head to one side (after removing his sunglasses) so that he can address vulnerable people with steady, but not intimidating eye-contact. He tends to do this more with women he has affection for, in a more avuncular than overtly sexual manner. Worth a notable mention (though not a quirk of his character) is that he has a habit of clearing frame after saying his lines. Beyond this, Caruso's CSI is an incredibly persistent, dogged, and at times a ruthless crime fighter who has suffered a great many personal losses before, during, and after the events of CSI-Miami (see especially episodes 424, 'Rampage', 501, 'Rio', & 603 'Inside Out'). He vigilantly maintains the integrity of the lab and his team, showcased in episodes like 'One Of Our Own' (425) and 'Burned' (522). In addition Caine remains extremely protective of crime victims, often going so far as to give them his phone number should they need to talk. Let's not forget that he also goes out on a limb to back team members who are going through rough times, as long as they keep him in the loop. He also renders financial assistance to his late brother's mistress as she needs it, both to help her out and to protect his niece.
He remains close to some of the victims of crimes that he has investigated. Caine's protective behaviour is perhaps portrayed most clearly in cases with children involved, and he reserves a special wrath for those who would hurt them, even when confronted with heavy opposition. Remember the pedophile Otis, whom he almost let slip into oblivion at the Miami Sequarium in Season 1? My favorite line of his from that episode was, "You died a long time ago," said in response to the Child Melstor's whining plea to just let him die. My second favorite was "And I'll be waiting outside to catch you, because that's my nature."
Horatio Caine's catchphrase, said many times throughout the series is 'We never close'. At first, it was seen as a threat to felons, but as the seasons have progressed, it's also become a mantra for victims, because "We never close," means that Horatio won't stop searching for justice for families who haven't gotten it yet and that he'll do whatever it takes without jeopardizing pending cases to assure that guilty parties are arrested, jailed, tried, and imprisoned for their crimes against his beloved Miami.

With Yelina Salas's help (she found Kyle's birth certificate, which listed John Walden as the father) and Maxine Valera (who confirmed the relationship by DNA tests) he discovers that Kyle is indeed his biological son. 2.08 "Big Brother" - Horatio encounters Suzie again, which leads him to Madison and Bob Keaton. Madison as it turns out is Raymond Sr.'s illegitimate child and Bob Keaton is Raymond's killer, and Suzie's husband. Horatio puts Bob away for life and sends Suzie and Madison away with monetary support and a promise that they'll be receiving more.
2.17 "Money for Nothing"-Yelina finds out about Suzie and thinks that Ray's child Madison belongs to Horatio.
2.20 "The Oath"-Yelina starts dating Stetler, a move that no one but the writers saw coming. Horatio is very hurt by this seeming betrayal.
Season 3:
3.01 "Lost Son" - Speedle is killed in the line of duty when his gun malfunctions.
3.24 "10-7" Ray seemingly comes back from the dead. Ray Sr., Yelina and Ray Jr. go off to Brazil.
Season 4:
4.23 " Shock" - Horatio gets married to Marisol Delko, Eric's sister.

Relationships:
The first relationship that fans are introduced to involving Horatio was in episode 117, "Simple Man", in this episode the fans first learned that Horatio was in love with his dead brothers' widow, Yelina. The relationship developed over 3 seasons until Ray Sr. was found to be alive and Yelina and Ray Sr. left for Brazil with their son Ray Jr; Horatio and Yelina where reunited during the season 5 episode, "Rio".

In the CSI continuum, Caine is (and has been throughout the show's development) a supervisor at the Miami-Dade crime lab, a forensic analyst and former homicide detective and bomb squad officer (his forensic speciality is arson and explosion evidence). He is very protective of his team, who affectionately call him "H." He is very concerned about the reputation of his lab, and takes great care to keep them clean, perhaps because of his experience with his tarnished younger brother, Ray. Unlike his counterpart in Las Vegas, Gil Grissom (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), he is a commissioned police officer, and thus carries a badge and gun and frequently uses deadly force. In the first two seasons, Caine carried a 9MM Beretta Cougar on the job. Since the beginning of season three, he has been shown carrying a SIG-Sauer P229. He is very insistent on gun maintenance, especially since team member Tim Speedle was killed in a shootout after his gun misfired. One of Caine's reasons for selecting Officer Ryan Wolfe as Speedle's replacement (in episode 302) is Wolfe's compulsive care of his firearm.
He is later forced to fire Wolfe, as the younger CSI compromised himself during the course of the investigation due to his gambling debts and lack of honesty regarding the situation (episode 522, "Burned"). Caine indicates a willingness to allow Wolfe to redeem himself, however, and possibly allow him to return to the team after reviewing all the files from his previous cases (episode 523, "Kill Switch").
At the end of Season 2 (episode 223, "MIA/NYC - Nonstop"), Caine travels to New York City in pursuit of a murder suspect and meets Detective Mac Taylor and his team, inaugurating the first season of CSI: New York. Caine later reunites with Detective Taylor and the New York CSIs to track down and arrest the murderer, Henry Darius, who would be extradited to Florida to face the death penalty (CSI: Miami episode 407, "Felony Flight," CSI: NY episode 207, Manhattan Manhunt").
He has many recurring enemies throughout the series, from serial killer Walter Resden to abusive Internal Affairs Agent Rick Stetler or corrupt judge Joseph Ratner. Some he thought put away for good come back to haunt him. Clavo Cruz, serving a life sentence for murdering a woman (episode 201, "Blood Brothers," episode 315, "Identity"), escapes custody in a dramatic rocket attack on a courthouse (superficially injuring coroner Alexx Woods). Cruz then kidnaps a court stenographer and forces Horatio to bring him $1 million dollars in exchange for her location. It is all a set-up, however, and Caine and Delko are ambushed on the roof of a parking garage. Though Horatio shoots down one man and escapes without injury, Delko is critically wounded even as Caine fires at the fleeing gunmen (episode 514, "No Man's Land"). Horatio eventually forces Cruz out of hiding by removing all his avenues of escape. Cruz approaches Horatio outside the Miami-Dade Crime Lab, and Caine kills Clavo with a single shot to the chest (episode 515, "Man Down").
Caine finds himself targeted by the son of a crime lord he helped put in jail some years earlier. After Caine's vehicle is vandalized, the young man smugly denies culpability, but Horatio sets him up in return and arrests him with deep disappointment after the young man walks headlong into his trap and tries to kill him (episode 602, "Cyber-lebrity").
Life before CSI
Caine's parents named him after author Horatio Alger ("Cross Jurisdictions"). Before he moved to Miami, Caine worked in New York City. (Coincidentally, Caruso starred in the first two seasons of NYPD Blue as Detective John Kelly.) It was there that he killed the man who murdered his mother — his own father. (episode 417, "Collision") On the job, in 1995, he was badly stabbed while investigating a case in which children were locked in closets while their parents were murdered. The perpetrator, Walter Resden, harbored a deep grudge against Caine, collecting the blood from the stabbing and preserving it for 10 years in order to frame him for the murder of Caine's girlfriend, Rachel Turner (episode 406, "Under Suspicion"). Caine is eventually forced to shoot Resden, although not fatally (episode 415, "Skeletons").
After his arrival in Florida, Horatio joined the Miami-Dade Police as a homicide detective but later transferred to the bomb squad, where he was mentored by Al Humphries, an older cop, who is later tragically killed after accidentally triggering a bomb he is attempting to disarm (episode 102, "Losing Face"). Finally, Caine moves to the Crime Lab, accepting a promotion to lieutenant (which earns him the animosity of Sergeant Rick Stetler, who is also vying for the rank). When veteran CSI Megan Donner goes on personal leave following the death of her husband, Horatio becomes the permanent head of the lab (episode 1.01, "Golden Parachute").
Personal life
Caine's original backstory, revealed over the course of the first three seasons, revolves primarily around his relationship with his late brother Raymond Caine, also a police officer, and with Raymond's supposed widow, Detective Yelina Salas. Horatio has, several times, found himself cleaning up Ray's messes. He discovers that his brother had an out-of-wedlock daughter with a drug addict, and he attempts to conceal this information from Yelina, even to the point of making her think the girl was in fact his own child. When the girl, Madison, falls ill and requires a transplant, Horatio is forced to reveal her true relationship with Ray to Yelina (episode 316, "Nothing to lose", 0:54:54 min). It was revealed in episode 320 ("Killer Date") that Raymond's apparent death had actually been staged to enable him to go deep undercover to gather information for a government investigation. Raymond and Horatio are briefly reunited when Ray Jr. is kidnapped. The brothers successfully rescue the boy and fake Ray Sr.'s death again before packing the whole family off to Brazil (episode 324, "10-7"). Unfortunately, Ray Sr. is unable to keep out of trouble even there, culminating in his murder; he dies in Horatio's arms (episode 501, "Rio").
The show also explores another of Caine's history: the events surrounding his mother's murder. In the episode "Manhattan Manhunt", a continuation of "Felony Flight", Caine is momentarily interrupted on his case when he is served with a subpoena. In "Nailed", Caine informs the rest of the CSI team that he had recently been charged by a district attorney in New York with the murder of the man who killed his mother. It is later revealed in "Collision" that this man was actually Caine's own father. After arresting Resden, who is charged with murdering his foster siblings because they didn't defend against his abusive foster father, whom he also attempted to kill, Caine reveals that he identifies with Resden because he, Caine, was physically abused by his father.
After Tim Speedle's death, Caine has a recurring nightmare in which he (Caine) is the one whose weapon misfired. Rather than talking with a counselor, as Internal Affairs officer Rick Stetler orders, he instead works it out with his girlfriend, State Attorney Rebecca Nevins (episode 310, "After the Fall".) He breaks up with her, however, after she makes a deal with a criminal he helped arrest (episode 313, "Cop Killer"). He later dates Rachel Turner, who is murdered by Walter Dresden in an attempt to take revenge on Caine for "embarrassing" him in New York about a decade earlier (episode 406, "Under Suspicion"). Caine also has a deep, unspoken affection for his brother's widow, Yelina Salas, and he is consistently concerned about her well-being. Though she evidently shares his feelings, neither of them has acted on them (episode 522, "Burned," et al.).
Despite knowing her for less than a year, Caine marries Eric Delko's leukemia-ridden sister Marisol, who is shot by a Mala Noche gang member and later dies in a hospital (episode 424, "Rampage"). He pursues the man who ordered the hit on her, Antonio Riaz, all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and eventually kills him in a knife fight, but not before Riaz brutally beats Caine's brother Raymond to death and attempts to corrupt Ray's son, Ray Jr. (episode 501, "Rio").
As Eric Delko lies in critical condition in the hospital following a near-fatal gunshot to the head several months later, Horatio and the other team members take turns at his bedside. Delko, his memory impaired by his wound, asks Horatio where Marisol is. Caine is unable to say the words, but Eric interprets his silence and sheds wordless tears as they both mourn her death (episode 515, "Man Down").
Perhaps because he has lost several family members to violent crime, Caine is determined to the point of obsession to put criminals behind bars. Caine also advocates the death penalty, and is not afraid to threaten suspects with it (CSI: NY episode 207, "Manhattan Manhunt").
In the sixth season's premiere, Horatio finds out that he is the biological father of a suspect in a murder case. His son is an orphaned boy named Kyle Harmon. Kyle's mother, Julia Eberly, met Horatio sixteen years earlier when he was under the alias John Walden, doing undercover tactical work in Pensacola. Though Horatio claimed that the relationship was serious, at least to him, he never knew she was pregnant, as she disappeared only a few months later. Kyle then went through a progression of foster homes, and he eventually landed in juvenile prison after going on a joyride in a stolen boat. Kyle later becomes a suspect in the murder of his parole officer, and when he is brought in for questioning, Horatio immediately recognizes the resemblance and begins to investigate into his past. With the help of Yelina Salas (who found Kyle's birth certificate, which listed "John Walden" as the father, an undercover name that Horatio used in the past) and Maxine Valera (who confirmed the relationship by DNA tests), he discovers that Kyle is indeed his biological son. When Horatio calls Kyle "son" at the end of the episode, the young man angrily replies "I'm not your son!" (episode 601, "Dangerous Son").

In episode 613, "Raising Caine," Kyle's mother Julia Eberly, who is now known as Julia Winston, is the prime suspect in the murder of her husband. While the CSI's prove that another man killed her husband, he claims that Julia planned the whole thing. Calleigh informs the man that they cannot prove Julia's involvement and therefore she goes free. Meanwhile, Julia tells Horatio that she left Kyle with his grandmother because she was not fit to mother him, but had always intended on taking him back once she was ready. She attends Kyle's trial, during which the main witness for the prosecution never shows, leaving the court no choice but to free Kyle. The CSI's learn that Julia Winston paid the witness a large amount of money to skip the trial. As the show ends the witness is seen, visibly hurt, taped to her steering wheel, with the car sinking into a lake. Back at the courthouse the Judge informs Kyle that both Horatio Caine and Julia Winston have filed separate custody suits, and Kyle must decide who he wants to go with. Kyle eventually decides to go with his mother, telling Horatio that she is all he has thought of for years. A clearly saddened Horatio tells him to keep in touch and delivers an icy farewell to Julia.
In the first part of the two-part opener to season six, episode 615, "Ambush", the body of Kathleen Newberry is discovered by two kids "bomb-fishing" in the lake. Horatio immediately thinks somehow Julia is responsible for this, and indeed finds her fingerprint and her assistant's hair on the body. He several times questions her about her involvement, to no avail. At this point Kyle is obviously partisan to his mother, and tells Horatio he won't let his father "use him against her." In the end, Julia manages to have Horatio arrested and extradited to Brazil for the murder of Antonio Riaz, the man who killed Marisol. At the end of the episode, Horatio is told by the chief of police in Brazil that he has made a lot of enemies there, but he is "free to go". The irony of this is not lost on Horatio, who has been handed a weapon by the chief, and who hears a cadre of guns cocking as the closing credits run.
In the opening seconds of the second part of the episode, actually episode 616, "All In", Horatio is surrounded by a posse of Mala Noche vigilantes with firearms, but succeeds in taking out the whole gang with nary a scratch - "Mala Noche justice, meet Miami justice." The scene after the credits is his small plane landing in Miami, he none the worse for wear, only to have Delko inform him while crossing the tarmac that Calleigh has been kidnapped by her internet stalker, whose web site is hosted by Dan Cooper, the former CSI whom Calleigh had fired for fraud in episode 604, "Bang Bang, Your Debt". Calleigh spends the early part of the episode unwillingly assisting two criminals who have shot their poker buddy to "solve a crime with Calleigh" and cover up the shooting, while Horatio and Delko and the full team are searching for her. Meanwhile Horatio meets face-to-face with Julia and informs her that Calleigh's kidnapping has the signature of Ron Saris, the thug who killed Kathleen Newberry and who is now living with Kyle and Julia. H's warning to Julia is "If you and Kyle stay with this man, you will both die." And she seems to listen.
His character is further expanded by the hints in this 2-part episode of the beginnings of a deeper feeling for Calleigh than just that of a co-worker. The clues she leaves behind from spot to spot are totally clear to H, while obfuscated to everyone else. She suggests to the younger of the two thieves who have kidnapped her that he is "not that guy" and makes an excuse to get him out of there, whereupon he immediately goes to Horatio and confesses. The follow-up investigation ties up several loose ends for Horatio, who has been following Calleigh's planted clues throughout the episode. At the end, it is indeed H with the gun pointed at the back of the villain's head, saying, "If I were you, I'd fold." She and Delko share a poignant look at the end, and he confesses he doesn't know what he would do if something happened to her. But it is Horatio who is shown staring down on the scene as the bad guys are collected, following Calleigh's hummer with his eyes. And there will still be more for H to discover about Julia and Kyle, besides the fact that his son has now taken up residence with a murderer.

David Caruso portrays Horatio Caine in a very idiosyncratic manner, sometimes resulting in parodies of the character (the most well known of these is probably Jim Carrey's on the Late Show with David Letterman). Caine is often seen putting on a pair of Silhouette Titanium Model 8568 sunglasses (with special polarized lenses), which online fans have started referring to as 'The Sunglasses of Justice' or 'Justice Shades'. He often stands sideways to the person with whom he is speaking and has a tendency to cock his head to one side (after removing his sunglasses) so that he can address vulnerable people with steady, but not intimidating eye-contact. Beyond this, Caruso's CSI is an incredibly persistent, dogged, and at times a ruthless crime fighter who has suffered a great many personal losses before, during, and after the events of CSI-Miami (see especially episodes 424, 'Rampage', 501, 'Rio', & 603 'Inside Out'). He vigilantly maintains the integrity of the lab and his team, showcased in episodes like 'One Of Our Own' (425) and 'Burned' (522). In addition Caine remains extremely protective of crime victims, often going so far as to give them his phone number should they need to talk. Let's not forget that he also goes out on a limb to back team members who are going through rough times, as long as they keep him in the loop. He also renders financial assistance to his late brother's mistress as she needs it, both to help her out and to protect his niece.
He remains close to some of the victims of crimes that he has investigated. Caine's protective behaviour is perhaps portrayed most clearly in cases with children involved, and he reserves a special wrath for those who would hurt them, even when confronted with heavy opposition. Remember the pedophile Otis, whom he almost let slip into oblivion at the Miami Sequarium in Season 1? My favorite line of his from that episode was, "You died a long time ago," said in response to the Child Melstor's whining plea to just let him die. My second favorite was "And I'll be waiting outside to catch you, because that's my nature."
Horatio Caine's catchphrase, said many times throughout the series is 'We never close'. At first, it was seen as a threat to felons, but as the seasons have progressed, it's also become a mantra for victims, because "We never close," means that Horatio won't stop searching for justice for families who haven't gotten it yet and that he'll do whatever it takes without jeopardizing pending cases to assure that guilty parties are arrested, jailed, tried, and imprisoned for their crimes against his beloved Miami.
Head of the crime lab:
In the CSI continuum, Caine is (and has been throughout the show's development) a supervisor at the Miami-Dade crime lab and a former homicide detective and bomb squad officer (his forensic speciality is arson and explosion evidence). He is very protective of his team, who affectionately call him H. He is very concerned about the reputation of the lab, and takes great care to keep them green, perhaps because of his experience with his tarnished younger brother Ray.
Unlike Gil Grissom, his counterpart in Las Vegas, he does not hesitate to carry or use a weapon. In the first two seasons Caine carried a 9MM Beretta Cougar on the job. Since the beginning of season three, he has been shown carrying a SIG-Sauer P229. He is very insistent on gun maintenance, especially since team member Tim Speedle was killed in a shootout after his gun misfired. One of Caine's reasons for selecting Officer Ryan Wolfe as Speedle's replacement is Wolfe's compulsive care of his firearm.
He is later forced to relieve Wolfe of duty, as the younger CSI compromises himself during the course of an investigation due to his gambling debts and lack of honesty regarding the situation.
Caine indicates a willingness to allow Wolfe to redeem himself and possibly return to the lab after reviewing all of the files from his previous cases. He predicates this return upon several stringent guidelines, including Wolfe's willingness to undergo periodic internal reviews to assure that he's still on the level.
At the end of Season Two Caine travels to New York City in pursuit of a murder suspect and meets Detective Mac Taylor and his team, inaugurating the first season of CSI-New York. Caine later reunites with Detective Taylor and the rest of the team to track down and arrest the murderer Henry Darius, who would be extradited to Florida to face the death penalty.
He has many recurring enemies throughout the series, from serial killer Walter Resden to abusive Internal Affairs Agent Rick Stetler or corrupt Judge Joseph Retler. Some he thought he put away for good come back to haunt him. Clavo Cruz, serving a life sentence for murdering a woman escapes custody in a dramatic rocket on a courthouse (superficially injuring Coroner Alexx Woods). Cruz then kidnaps a court stenographer and forces Horatio to bring him $1 million dollars in exchange for her location. It is all a set up however, and Caine and Delko are ambushed on the roof of a parking lot. Though Horatio shoots down one man and escapes without injury, Delko is critically wounded even as Caine fires at the fleeing gunmen. Horatio eventually forces Cruz out of hiding by removing all his avenues of escape. Cruz approaches Horatio outside the Miami-Dade crime lab, and Caine kills Clavo with a single shot to the chest when the man refuses to surrender his weapon.
Caine finds himself targeted by the son of a crime lord he helped put in jail some years earlier. After Caine's vehicle is vandalized, the young man smugly denies culpability, but Horatio sets him up in return and arrests him with deep disappointment after the young man walks headlong into his trap and tries to kill him.
Life Before CSI:
Caine's parents named him after the author Horatio Algar. Before he moved to Miami, Horatio worked in New York City. It was there that he killed the man that murdered his mother - his own father. On the job, he was badly stabbed while investigating a case in which children were locked in the closets while their parents were murdered. The perpetrator, Walter Resden, harboured a deep grudge against Caine, collecting and preserving the blood from the stabbing for ten years in order to frame Horatio for the murder of his girlfriend, Rachel Turner. Caine is eventually forced to shoot Resden, although not fatally.
After his arrival in Florida, Horatio joined the Miami-Dade Police as a homicide detective, but later transferred to the bomb squad, where he was mentored by Al Humphries, an older cop, who was later tragically killed after accidentally triggering a bomb he was attempting to disarm. Finally, Caine moves to the crime lab, accepting a promotion to lieutenant (which earns him the animosity of Sergeant Rick Stetler, who is also vying for the rank). After watching every episode in which this snake is involved, it's apparent why Mr. Stetler wasn't offered the job. He hasn't the maturity or the compassion to fulfill the duties assigned if they conflict with his own internal agendas.
When veteran CSI Megan Donner goes on personal leave following the death of her husband, Horatio becomes the interim head of the lab in her absence. During the latter part of the first season and throughout the second, it becomes apparent that Megan should have resigned from her post following her husband's death in the line of duty. Her parting shot, issued in a voice mail to Horatio was, "I can't handle this. It reminds me too much of my husband's death."
Personal Life:
Caine's original back story, revealed over the course of the first three seasons, revolves primarily around his relationship with his late brother, Raymond Caine, also a police officer, and with Raymond's supposed widow, Detective Yelina Salas. Horatio has found himself cleaning up Ray's messes more than once.
He discovered that his brother had an out-of-wedlock daughter with a drug addict, and he successfully conceals this information from Yelina even though his own reputation suffers as a result. He allows Yelena to think that Madison is his own child. When she falls ill and requires a bone marrow transplant, Horatio is forced to reveal her true relationship with Ray to Yelena.
It was revealed in episode 3:20 that Raymond's apparent death had been staged to enable him to go deep undercover to gather information for a government investigation. Raymond and Horatio are briefly reunited when Ray Jr. is kidnapped. The brothers successfully rescue the boy and fake Ray Sr's death again before packing the whole family off to Brazil. Unfortunately Ray Sr. is unable to keep out of trouble even there, culminating in his murder by Horatio's arch enemy, Riaz. He dies in Horatio's arms.
The show also explores another side of Caine's history; the events surrounding his mother's murder. In the episode "Manhattan Manhunt", a continuation of "Felony Flight", Caine is momentarily interrupted on his case when he is served with a subpoena. In "Nailed" Caine informs the rest of the CSI team that he has been recently charged by the district attorney in New York with the murder of the man who killed his mother. It is later revealed in "Collision" that this man was actually Caine's own father.
After arresting Resden, who is charged with murdering his foster siblings because they didn't defend against his abusive foster father, whom he also attempted to kill, Caine reveals that he identifies with Resden because he, Caine, was physically abused by his father. While he understands where Resden is coming from, he never condones the lengths Resden took to avenge his abuse. His final act of mercy is toward the daughter of Resden's NYC victims, when he commands Resden to leave Miami and never return.
After Tim's death, Caine has a recurring nightmare is which he (Caine) is the one whose weapon misfires. Rather than talking with a counselor, as Internal Affairs Agent Rick Stetler orders, instead he works it out with his girlfriend, State Attorney Rebecca Nevins. He breaks up with her however, after she makes a deal with a criminal he helps arrest. He later dates Rachel Turner, who is murdered by Walter Resden in an attempt to take revenge on Caine for embarrassing him in New York more than a decade earlier.
Caine also has a deep, unspoken affection for his brother's widow Yelina Salas and he is consistently concerned about her well-being. Though she evidently shares his feelings, neither of them has acted on them. Initially they were waiting for a socially acceptable time to begin seeing each other; later, due to the misapprehension about Madison's true paternity, Yelena sadly decides to cut Horatio off at the pass; and finally, when she returns to Miami as a Private investigator, the saga continues.
Despite knowing her for less than a year, Caine marries Eric's leukemia-ridden sister Marisol, who is shot by a Mala Noche gang member, less then 24 hours after being married to Horatio and later dies in Miami-Dade hospital. He pursues the man who ordered the hit on her, Antonio Riaz, all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and eventually kills him in a knife fight, but not before Riaz brutally beats Caine's brother Raymond to death and tries to corrupt Ray's son, Ray Jr.
As Delko lies in the same hospital recovering from a near-fatal gunshot wound to the head several months later, Horatio and the rest of the team take turns at his bedside. Delko, his memory impaired by the wound, asks Horatio where Marisol is. Caine in unable to say the words, but Delko interprets his silence and sheds wordless tears as they both mourn her death. Perhaps because he has lost several family members to violent crime, Caine is determined to the point of obsession to put criminals behind bars. Caine also advocates the death penalty, and is not afraid to threaten suspects with it, especially when it's deserved.
In the sixth seasons' premiere, Horatio finds out that he is the biological father of a suspect in a murder case. His son is a foster boy named Kyle Harmon. Kyle's mother, Julia Eberly, met Horatio sixteen years earlier when he was under the alias John Walden, during undercover tactical work in Pensacola. Though Horatio claimed that the relationship was serious, at least to him, he never knew she was pregnant, and she disappeared only a few months later.
Kyle then went through a progression of foster homes after his mother abandoned him at age 6, and eventually landed in juvenile prison after going on a joyride in a stolen boat. Kyle later becomes a suspect in the murder of a parole officer and when he is brought in for questioning, Horatio immediately recognizes the resemblance and begins to investigate into his past. With Yelina Salas's help (she found Kyle's birth certificate, which listed John Walden as the father) and Maxine Valera (who confirmed the relationship by DNA tests) he discovers that Kyle is indeed his biological son. When Horatio calls Kyle son at the end of the episode, the young man angrily replies I'm not your son.
After rescuing Kyle, who has been kidnapped out of jail and left in a pipe, Horatio admits to Kyle that he is his father.
Backstory:
Raised in 1960s New York City
By age 16 Caine had experienced a lifetime: civil rights marches, violent race riots, and the rise of drug culture.
His mother, a single parent in a time that did not favor such a definition of family, taught Caine that strength resided in your mind, not your hand. Though she was demanding, her love protected him until she was killed by his father.Whom he killed trying to stop him
A three-dimensional thinker, Caine can rapidly understand how pieces fit into a puzzle. He knows that science ultimately provides the solution, but he also knows that there is more to crime-solving that blood spatter and DNA. When it comes to protecting his city, Horatio doesn't just trust science, he trusts his gut.
His Working Style:
Horatio feels responsible for those around him, and keeps a cool head on the job. Horatio lives on instinct and is compelled to protect the city and those he cares about.
He keeps his Reputation, and rarely threatens it.
He is perhaps most famous for his trademark "oneliners" that CSI fans love to hear.
His Personal Style:
Literal: Horatio appears to have very expensive taste. Some of his clothing looks to be high-end, designer label. (Particularly Hugo Boss.) Horatio is great at sporting a 'Business Casual' look. The signature sunglasses, of course, complete his look.
He's a real wolf with women, but respects them even after the relationship fizzles. His sole exception to this rule was during his all too brief courtship of and marriage to Marisol Delko.
When you pair his good looks and fashion sense with his care and compassion for his family and the victims of the cases he oversees, you get something that is purely Horatio.

His Personal Demons:
Dealing with the deaths of Tim Speedle, his brother Raymond, his mother, and his mentor Al Humphries. His feelings for his dead brother's wife Yelina, and the death of his wife Marisol Delko Caine. The disrespect he feels for Rick Stetler, who's constantly whining about his missed promotion. Though Rick can never beat Horatio's awsome comebacks, Rick often feels intimadated and is waiting by the phone for something to come up about Horatio, Ray Sr. or his CSI team. Rick will never ever win this war.
His Compassion for Children & the Helpless:
Although Horatio can be vicious to felons, When it comes to Child and Teen related crimes, Horatio makes it his mission to find the wrong dooer. Because thats the compationate side of Horatio Caine. Horatio identifies with abused children on a deeper level because he suffered severe abuse as a kid. The poor kid watched as his father murdered his mother, yet chose to be on the right side of the law as a teen and adult. Because of this, he is a paean against felons who blame their rotten childhoods for their crimes. He was as abused as they, but chose to go the road of serving others instead of himself.

1.02 "Losing Face" - Horatio's mentor from the bomb squad, Al Humphries, is killed in the line of duty.
1.06 "Broken" - Horatio catches child killer Stuart Otis.
1.13 "Bunk" - Horatio visits his brother Raymond's grave.
1.17 "Simple Man" -The relationship between Horatio and Yelina was introduced; the fans first learned that Horatio secretly loved his dead brothers wife Yelina. The audience sees that perhaps Horatio loved her first.
1.23 "Freaks and Tweaks" - Horatio meets Suzie and convicts a tweaker who knew Raymond when he was working undercover narcotics.
1.24 "Body Count" - Stuart Otis escapes prison with Hank Kerner, a sadistic murderer who's out to get the people who helped put him away, including Calleigh. Both are rounded up again.
Season 2:
2.01 "Blood Brothers" - Horatio has a run in with the Cruz brothers. He is able to arrest Ramon, despite his pleas of diplomatic immunity, but has to let Clavo walk. Horatio tells Yelina that he still having boundary issues with dating her because he still thinks of her as his sister-in-law.
2.08 "Big Brother" - Horatio encounters Suzie again, which leads him to Madison and Bob Keaton. Madison as it turns out is Raymond Sr.'s illegitimate child and Bob Keaton is Raymond's killer, and Suzie's husband. Horatio puts Bob away for life and sends Suzie and Madison away with monetary support and a promise that they'll be receiving more.
2.17 "Money for Nothing"-Yelina finds out about Suzie and thinks that Ray's child Madison belongs to Horatio.
2.20 "The Oath"-Yelina starts dating Stetler, a move that no one but the writers saw coming. Horatio is very hurt by this seeming betrayal.
Season 3:
3.01 "Lost Son" - Speedle is killed in the line of duty when his gun malfunctions.
3.24 "10-7" Ray seemingly comes back from the dead. Ray Sr., Yelina and Ray Jr. go off to Brazil.
Season 4:
4.23 " Shock" - Horatio gets married to Marisol Delko, Eric's sister.
4.24 "Rampage"- Marisol Delko gets shot and eventually dies. Horatio thinks that the bullet that killed her was meant for him.
4.25 "One Of Our Own"- Officer Aaron Jessop gets killed in the line of duty.
Relationships:
The first relationship that fans are introduced to involving Horatio was in episode 117, "Simple Man", in this episode the fans first learned that Horatio was in love with his dead brothers' widow, Yelina. The relationship developed over 3 seasons until Ray Sr. was found to be alive and Yelina and Ray Sr. left for Brazil with their son Ray Jr; Horatio and Yelina where reunited during the season 5 episode, "Rio".
Before H. met Marisol he was involved with Rebecca Nevins, but dumped her when he found out that she was making a deal with a cop killer in the episode "Cop Killer."
He was dating Eric Delko's sister Marisol in episode 11 of season 4 called "The Score" but later married her in the episode "Shock", but in the episode "Rampage" she was shot and later died.
