Name;; Dr. Timothy Speedle
Expertise;; Medical Examiner
Personality;; Speed is a many faceted man who takes a long time to get to know. On one side, he's friendly and relaxed, hazing the new recruits--including Delko, when he first joined the team. Another side of him is dark and broody, never seeming to trust in his own abilities and questioning whether he's doing anyone any good in the world. This was most apparent during a 'mission' where they were dealing with a thief who knew his forensics. When the kid killed himself, even with Speed having taken him under his wing, it hit hard, making him question his role in life and consider not going back to work again. Another side of Tim loves to go to clubs and listen to music, being more social than others might at first believe. And finally, the professional side of him, which is most apparent when he's fully focused on a case or patient. [See history] He loves what he does, even if he does at times question himself. Though he cares about his work, he was always lax about one thing--gun maintenance.

Name: Timothy Speedle "Speed" "Timmy"
Age: 35
Physical Description: Tim stands at 6' even, and 153 lbs. He has jet black hair and deep brown eyes that are sometimes a tad too expressive. He has many old scars from wounds picked up on various assignments as a CSI in Miami. But the most distinctive scar he has is hidden safely beneath shirts at all times. A large and heavily scarred area on the left portion of his chest speaks of a highly traumatic incident. What looks like a bullet wound has healed, though the scarring has been bad, leaving deep lines spidering out from the original wound. His clothing choices are still similar to how they were back when he was a CSI--tee shirts and jeans when he can get away with it. Anything with Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Grateful Dead his first choice. When forced to, he will wear button down shirts, usually with vertical stripes, in darker colors, ranging from maroon and navy to blacks and greys.
Favourite Colour: Deep greys and blacks, due to how striking they are on his person.
Personality: Speed is a many faceted man who takes a long time to get to know.
Favourite Place: His own study, where he can relax and no one can judge him.
Backstory: Speed was born and brought up in Syracuse NY. His father wasn't wealthy, but he was well off, being that he owned a chain of restaurants. This meant that Tim was always well provided for, whether it be food, clothing, or schooling. His mother chose to spend her time as a volunteer with those who were not as well off or fortunate in life as he. Growing up around all sorts, from neglected and abandoned to abused children, he had a strong sense of compassion for victims of all sorts instilled in him at a very young age.
Tim was eventually blessed [or cursed, depending on how you looked at it] with a younger brother. Due to a 13 year age difference the two never really developed a relationship, though this was mostly Tim's fault as he preferred to keep to himself.
Those hours he spent alone were not wasted. Reading everything he could get his hands on, Tim had a voracious appetite for knowledge. There was not a subject to be found that did not hold some fascination for him, but his preferred section of the school library [as well as the public] was the sciences. Here, he met his one and only best friend. Through high school they led their science team to the State championship. [4 years in a row]
Just a few months before high school graduation, his best friend was paralyzed from the neck down in a tragic snowmobile accident while they were on their high school senior trip. Plans that they'd had for years to go to Europe and then college together dissolved in an instant. Determined to do everything he could for his best friend, Speed went on to Columbia University and became one of the most devoted students there, throwing himself into the biology of paralysis. [His thesis: Molecular mechanisms of neuronal differentiation, axon guidance, and cell recognition in vertebrate development.")
At the top of his class, and well on his way to becoming a neurosurgeon, many had high hopes for the promising young doctor in training. But two years later, his friend died from complications during surgery. This shattered Tim. As far as he could see, nothing mattered anymore. Dropping out of school was only the first of many rash actions he took in the year or so to come.
Disappearing completely, his family thought he'd committed suicide after losing his friend. Several questioned his relationship to the friend, thinking it might have been something more, but no one quite knew for sure. Close on to a year later, he called his family from his best friend's uncle's clear down in Miami. He'd wandered there a few months before and had been staying with the man since. When questioned about his path in life, his answer was the same. "No, he still didn't know what to do with his life."
These confused and hopeless feelings continued until he followed his friend's uncle to work at the Miami-Dade Crime Lab. The same focus he'd had in school resurfaced and he consumed everything he could about the professions that one could choose in the crime lab. Here he met Megan Donner, who took him under her wing and Speed realized shortly thereafter what he wished to do with his life.
Returning to his old school, he finished his honors degree in a single year and took an official internship with the Miami-Dade lab under Donner. Only six months later, he was a full time CSI.
Here he spent the next few years getting to know the team and forging friendships. And when Horatio Caine came on the scene, a friendship was quickly forged, even if it wasn't always as apparent to outsiders. With his same rough mannerisms, gruff voice, and quirked eyebrows, many found him hard to get along with, though those closest to him in the lab grew to love him quickly.
One trait that everyone always joked about was his bad habit of wearing tee shirts and jeans when the jobs called more for dress shirts and slacks. His constant scruff and slight rebellious nature--particularly toward his gun maintenance habits--were also well noted.
Through many cases, good and bad experiences off and on duty with the team, he grew to accept his role there, and even let himself be happy, though he never forgot his best friend.
And then one fateful day in 2004, he was shot during what should have been a routine investigation. His gun misfired, and the momentary hesitation he had while looking at it resulted in a fatal shot to the chest.
Or so everyone thought. [[Here's where canon deviates.]]
Not allowed to do the autopsy due to the emotional attachment to him, Tim was instead turned over to one of the others. And it was discovered that he was not dead, but only just holding on to life. A decision was made to move him to an undisclosed location to receive medical help, and to keep the rest of the team focused on the case.
Tim woke while they were still working on it, but displayed a total and complete amnesia of everything after learning his best friend had died. The higher ups on the force made a bad decision that day. Thinking that there might have been more behind the shooting, they moved Speed, who didn't remember anything anyhow, to Chicago, where they called in favors to have him treated and taken care of for as long as needed. The rest of the team back in Miami were led to believe that he had died, and a fake funeral was even given. It wasn't until years later that they realized that it would have been perfectly safe to bring him back, and by then, none of them wished to admit to a mistake and subject both the team, and Tim, to a painful reunion.
Tim, you see, had never recovered his memories, and had gone on to earn his degree as a neurosurgeon once he'd recovered from his injuries.. Having none of the memories of those missing years, and only having been told that he'd lived a life apart from what he had now, he'd chosen to leave it in the dark, moving on with his life. Though something inside always felt missing. Empty.
Eventually he packed up and moved his practice--he was now one of the most demanded and best recognized neurosurgeons in the country--to Miami, hoping to set up a practice and perhaps regain some of those missing memories that pained him so greatly.
He has been back in Miami for less than a year, and has not had much luck establishing himself in the local community, even with his specialty being one that could always be high in demand. He has taken a position as an M.E. while trying to get his foot in the door in one of the local hospitals.
The ache he hoped to escape has only grown, and in the last few months, Tim has taken to drinking heavily in his time off. His co-workers and staff have taken to calling him by a nickname when he permits it, though this too seems to enhance the ache. Why does "Speed" produce such a feeling of loss?
Off Duty: Even as anti-social as Speed has started to become in the last few years, he can't resist the call of a good club, and can usually be found there on his off hours. If not there, he's stopping by to pick up Coffee and people watch and chat with Zooey.
When he choses to stay home, he prefers to watch old fashioned horror movies and thrillers, or listen to Grateful Dead.
Favourite Book: It's hard to say what Speed's favorite book is, seeing as he devours everything in site when given the chance. His bookshelves have everything from classics like Les Miserables and The Three Musketeers to the latest comic books and manga. If forced to choose, he'd probably choose some of Anne Rule's true crime books, though he couldn't tell you exactly why.
Bad habits: Heavy drinking and the occasional smoke. Absinthe is an occasional vice of his as well. A few nervous tics, one of chewing on his thumb, and another of checking over his shoulder are unexplainable to him.
